Siding with Board-and-Batten

Board-and-batten, or boardand-bat as it’s sometimes called, is another style of siding

that can double as sheathing. This

method uses plain, wide, ¾"-thick boards installed vertically. The joints between the boards are then covered with narrow boards or strips about 1½" wide, called battens or bats.

Old shed, barn, and fence

boards — or any boards wider than

5" — will work well for board-andbatten. For battens, use 1×2 furring

strips.
